Volvo has announced the removal of the “Recharge” designation from its fully electric models, the XC40 and C40, as it seeks to simplify its product lineup and focus more on electric vehicles for the future. As part of this change, the two models have been renamed EX40 and EC40 respectively, with options to improve performance and a special black version.

Renamed XC40 and C40 Recharge to simplify their nomenclature

Volvo has taken an important step towards unifying and simplifying its model lineup by changing the names of the XC40 and C40 Recharge electric cars to EX40 and EC40. This move comes as part of the company's strategy to make the nomenclature of its electric cars more consistent, in keeping with the launch of new models such as the EX30, EX90 and EM90.

Volvo's Commercial Director and Executive Vice President stressed that the aim of this change is to facilitate the customer selection process and ensure a homogeneous experience across the company's electric vehicle range. He also stressed Volvo's commitment to converting its entire range to electric by 2030, in addition to continuing to modernize and develop hybrid models.

New Performance Enhancement Package for EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor models

Volvo's new Performance Package is designed to increase horsepower by 34 hp (25 kW), contributing to better acceleration thanks to an innovative pedal design. The “Performance” mode can give drivers up to 436 hp (325 kW) of power.

This package will be available as an upgrade option for new models, and owners of older cars can also easily purchase and install it on their cars, providing them with the opportunity to enjoy performance improvements without having to purchase a new car.

Special black edition for the new EX40, EC40 and XC40

Volvo's special edition Onyx Black paint comes with black badges, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a Microtech or charcoal fabric interior, giving the models a luxurious and elegant feel.

Volvo continues to achieve success in the market, with continued growth for the 17th consecutive month in January, as electric cars accounted for 16% of the company’s total sales last year.

With plans to launch new electric models, including the EX30 model priced from $35,000, Volvo is looking to continue its growth in 2024. This includes the launch of its first three-row electric SUV, the EX90, and its first luxury electric truck, the EM90, expected to launch this year.

Volvo is moving boldly towards all-electricity

Volvo, a leading automotive brand in its commitment to producing a full range of electric vehicles, is now beginning to reap the benefits of this early commitment.

In October 2019, the company launched its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge, which stands out with its sporty design and Swedish elegance typical of Volvo, and offers a range exceeding 250 miles (400 km) and an all-wheel drive system.

This was followed by Volvo's launch of the C40 Recharge in March 2021, a small crossover aimed at a new market segment, although it faced some criticism regarding its limited range of 210 miles according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), compared to more than 300 miles for the Tesla. The Model Y has a similar battery size.

Volvo has updated its electric lineup over the past year, achieving improvements in range and charging speed, as well as adding several new features.

With the latest updates, the new XC40 has an EPA-rated range of 270 miles, while the C40 Recharge has a range of 275 miles. As Volvo moves towards an all-electric future, the company is working to simplify its model nomenclature to reduce confusion with hybrid models.
