In January 2024, Germany saw 213,553 new passenger car registrations, an increase of 19% compared to the previous year, representing the highest registration rate since 2020. Last month also saw a rise in electric car sales, which is a positive sign after a continuous decline for four years. Consecutive months at the end of 2023.

36,868 new electric cars were registered, an increase of 37% year-on-year, and their percentage in the market rose to 17.3%, compared to 15.1% in the previous year. Despite this rise, the numbers are still lower than they were two years ago, with registrations standing at 39,792 and a market share of 21.6% in January 2022, with the heavy support for plugins influenced by incentives at the time.

Registrations of battery electric vehicles also rose by 24% year-on-year, to 22,474 vehicles, representing 10.5% of the total market, compared to 10.1% a year earlier and 11.3% two years ago. Additionally, hybrid vehicle sales saw a significant rebound after a full year of decline due to a lack of incentives in 2023, with 14,394 new vehicles registered, an increase of 63% year-on-year.

In the German car market, Mercedes shined by registering more than 6,000 new vehicles, including 2,358 fully electric cars. In contrast, BMW came in second place with a total of almost 4,000 vehicles, followed by Audi with 3,518 units, with Tesla equaling the number of registrations with Audi, leading the all-electric car category.

What is interesting is that Volkswagen, despite topping plug-in sales with 78,427 registrations in 2023, ranked fifth with 2,176 registrations, which is relatively low compared to its previous history on the market.
